Absence doesn't mean disconnection. Non-custodial parents need to be reassured that they can maintain connection with their children even if daily physical visitation is not possible, and even in the face of another uncooperative parent. Non-custodial parents can discover a list of ideas (fear and anger are known to drastically reduce one's own creativity) such as, making a scrapbook to share when there is time spent together; making audio tapes of jokes riddles or the parent reading an age-appropriate children's book, E-mailing riddles or silly poems; getting a separate voice-mail system so that the child and parent can leave each other messages; mailing cards, comics or articles cut out of the newspaper; or mailing things to the child's school or calling there at lunch time if the other parent is interfering with communication.
