As I was driving home from my morning chore - car pooling my 9th
graders to school - I began to ponder…what is keeping the judicial system and
so many women so far behind the times. The thinking, as far as I understand
it, is that women, as a group, are somehow better suited and better equipped
to be single parents regardless of the sex of the children involved. That
somehow their "maternal instincts" affords them a step up over the average
man.
I am of the baby boom generation. In fact, because of my age (I was
born in 1952) I think I fall somewhere smack dab in the middle of it. I have
lived through and fought for the women’s movement in all areas. I am a big
believer in equal pay for equal work. I have two daughters of my own and I
have tried to instill in them the belief in themselves that there is nothing
they can’t do and no goal they can’t reach if they put in the work to getting
there.
